MATERIAL NEEDS
Food
Man has had, does have, and always
will have a need to nourish himself. His
nourishment depends on what is available
in his specific region, and on his skill to
produce. His choice of nourishment, in some
cases, is influenced by his religious beliefs.
Shelter
To secure his life and possessions, man
is forced to seek some refuge from heat,
cold and other destructive elements. His
first shelter was a cave in the mountain-side.
As time passed, caves developed into huts
and into very primitive houses. These,
by gradual improvements, evolved into
our modern well-equipped dwellings.
Clothing
The vagaries of climates and of the
elements made clothing necessary for
man. The materials of clothes, their
styles and colors, and their ritual
and social purpose differ greatly
throughout history and for peoples.
Transportation
Man has had and will always have
a means of traveling from place to place.
His first and only resource was walking-his feet
were a valuable asset. In time, animals were
used to convoy, not only people, but all kinds
of cargo. Camels, horses, elephants, mules
and donkeys become common means to travel.
Waterways, wherever they were available,
carried boats, which though primitive in the
beginning, have developed into the
present-day multitude of sea-faring vessels.
Defense
Primitive man is usually represented
bearing a club, indicative of his need
to fend off possible foes. Throughout
the years, the instruments of
defense became more varied,
more dangerous, and more deadly.
