The name Tertiary is from an 18th C
classification that tried to group the age
of all rocks into four divisions. This period is
made up of five epochs of unequal length.
The Tertiary Period is called
the Age of Mammals. There was a
successful invasion by these animals of
the places available after the demise of the
reptiles at the end of the Cretaceous Period.
Most of the mammals were very different
from the ones we know today but they
gradually acquired the modern form.
There was a greater variety of flowering
plants. The ancestors of the horse
and elephants appeared.
The primates developed into "grasping"
tree climbers. They fed on leaves, fruits,
nuts and sap. The primates developed
better eyesight because the position of their
eyes in the skull had changed to the front.
The Himalayas and Alps were formed.
