MONTESSORI THE GREAT LESSONS : The Cretaceous Period

 The Coming of Life

 The Cretaceous Period

The name comes from the chalk deposits
where most of the fossils of this period
were found. This chalk was left  by the
foraminifera - sea creatures with shells
of eleven rings. These were used by
the Romans for money.

New plants appeared that had flowers
and corollas. There were many, many
insects at this time including butterflies.

Toward the end of this period the earth
once again was covered with ice, to a great
extent. The great reptiles, once such powerful
masters of the land, could not stand the freezing
cold and gradually died.  Since reptiles abandon
their eggs - the eggs were eaten by others.
Also the young reptiles were eaten.

A true mark of evolutionary advance is
the instinct for preservation of the young.
This is a new energy - LOVEThis
instinct goes with warm blooded animals -
birds and mammals. Today there are
armored reptiles: crocodiles, turtles.
